With the support of the Capital Area Workforce Development Board, StepUP Ministry has hired two employment recruiters in Wake and Johnston Counties to assist former-offenders in employment services.
StepUP Ministry annually serves over 600 people a year in its jobs program, and over 75% of those individuals served are former-offenders. StepUP currently has 6 employment counselors on staff to assist in teaching and training individuals in the basic skills needed to attain and retain employment.
StepUP Ministry offers week-long job classes every other week with 19 hours of classroom training and 2 hours of resume preparation with an employment counselor. The jobs model focuses on compassionate accountability where participants are expected to show up on time, participate in the class and come appropriately dressed. StepUP provides clothing for all participants entering the program.
In 2009, StepUP placed 185 people in jobs with 154 being former-offenders. In addition, another 78 people found their own employment. The average starting salary for a job is $9.81. Overall, StepUP has placed over 1,000 people in jobs since 2004 and is engaged with over 160 employers the Raleigh area.
Once an individual is placed in employment, StepUP offers a 9-month life skills program teaching budgeting, goal setting, career development, debt reduction and credit improvement.
